This experimental pattern gold dollar was minted in gold-plated silver and hand-engraved by James Longacre, rather than being struck from dies. Only a few of these specimens are known to exist.

This pattern half-eagle "gold" coin ($5.00 piece) was minted in copper. It had the regular, previous obverse (front), but added the motto "In God We Trust" to the reverse (back), which became the pattern that was adopted from 1866-1908.
