This experimental pattern gold dollar was minted in gold-plated silver and hand-engraved by James Longacre, rather than being struck from dies. Only a few of these specimens are known to exist.

Pattern Gold
Half-Eagle

This pattern half-eagle "gold" coin ($5.00 piece) was minted in copper. It had the regular, previous obverse (front), but added the motto "In God We Trust" to the reverse (back), which became the pattern that was adopted from 1866-1908.

Pattern Gold
Double Eagle

This gold double-eagle pattern was actually minted in gold. It is the only known specimen of the 1849 issue and is on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
