Capped Bust types

There were only two types of the 10-dollar gold pieces minted during this period; Capped Bust to Right, Small Eagle and Capped Bust to Right, Heraldic Eagle. Between 1804 and 1838 there were no $10 gold pieces made in the United States.

Gold Eagles,
Liberty Head
Coronet types

With the resumption of the ten-dollar gold eagle in 1838, the coin was made smaller and employed the Coronet type Liberty Head design. In 1866 the motto, "In God We Trust" appeared above the eagle on the reverse of the gold coin. The value "Ten D." is shown for the first time on this denomination coin.

Gold Eagles,
Indian Head type

The $10 gold eagle Indian Head type was designed by Saint-Gaudens and was minted in two types: without the motto, "In God We Trust," and with the motto beginning in 1908. St.-Gaudens also added raised stars on the outer edge of the coin, representing the states in the Union; 46 stars increased to 48 in 1912.
